Intent, Implementation, Impact
Intent
At Haslam Park Primary School, we believe physical education is central to pupils’ development as healthy, confident, and resilient individuals. PE is not only about skill acquisition and sporting success; it is about fostering creativity, collaboration, self-confidence, and wellbeing, empowering pupils to enjoy and value an active lifestyle for life. Our curriculum is deliberately inclusive and ambitious for all, ensuring that every child, regardless of ability, background, or experience, can develop fundamental movement skills, understand their own physical potential, and build confidence through sport and physical activity. Pupils are encouraged to explore their strengths, overcome challenges, and understand that success in PE is about personal growth, resilience, and teamwork, not just winning or being the fastest. Through PE, pupils develop an understanding of their bodies, health, and wellbeing, and gain the knowledge, skills, and motivation to make healthy lifestyle choices. Our intent is for pupils to leave Haslam Park physically literate, socially confident, and equipped to access community sport, recreation, and lifelong wellbeing opportunities.
Implementation:
At Haslam Park, our PE curriculum is structured, progressive, and inclusive, providing all pupils with at least two hours of dedicated PE each week, alongside daily active opportunities.
- Schemes and progression: We follow the Greenacre PE scheme of work, providing comprehensive National Curriculum coverage and a clear progression of physical, cognitive, and personal skills from EYFS to Year 6. Units are sequenced to build on prior learning and ensure pupils develop competence, confidence, and creativity in a wide range of activities.
- Daily review and skill reinforcement: Lessons include opportunities to revisit and reinforce prior learning, supporting long-term retention. Pupils practise and apply movement skills, balance, agility, coordination, and tactical understanding in increasingly challenging and collaborative contexts.
- EYFS: Children explore Expressive Arts and Design linked movement, developing coordination, control, and spatial awareness through play and thematic activities, while beginning to understand the benefits of healthy choices.
- KS1 & KS2: Pupils consolidate fundamental movement skills and extend them into competitive and cooperative activities, learning to combine actions into sequences, collaborate effectively, and reflect on personal and group performance.
- Wellbeing and COVID adaptations: To address the impact of COVID-19, our curriculum emphasises mental health, resilience, and confidence, supported by the Wellbeing Through Sport coach. Additionally, all pupils receive a half-term block of wellbeing intervention sessions delivered by Ed Start, focusing on emotional regulation, stress management, and self-awareness, equipping them with skills to manage their mental and emotional wellbeing.
Community links and enrichment: Partnerships with the Manchester United Foundation provide high-quality lessons, leadership opportunities, and extra-curricular activities, connecting pupils with local sports clubs. Year 3 and 6 pupils attend Ladybridge High School for swimming lessons, and a wide range of afterschool clubs broadens experience and participation.
Assessment: Pupils undertake end-of-year Mastermind assessments to capture skill retention, physical literacy, and personal development through PE, providing teachers with robust data to inform future planning and ensure progression for all pupils.
Impact:
By the time pupils leave Haslam Park, they will:
- Be physically confident and literate, able to apply movement skills across a variety of activities.
- Demonstrate resilience, collaboration, and self-reflection, understanding that success in PE comes from personal growth as well as performance.
- Understand the importance of health, fitness, and wellbeing, making positive lifestyle choices for themselves and influencing others.
- Develop emotional regulation and stress management skills through targeted Ed Start intervention sessions, supporting mental health and wellbeing.
- Be engaged with local sports and community opportunities, aware of pathways to continue active participation beyond school.
Apply skills, strategies, and knowledge learned in PE to social, academic, and family contexts, contributing to their holistic development. The PE curriculum at Haslam Park ensures that all pupils enjoy, value, and succeed in physical activity, leaving school as active, healthy, and confident citizens ready to thrive in school, sport, and life. Impact is measured via our approach to foundation subject assessment which is designed to measure retention. Assessment follows a clear cycle of curriculum coverage, daily reviews, end-of-year ‘Mastermind’ quizzes, targeted teaching and retesting. Daily reviews support knowledge retention, while Mastermind quizzes identify gaps and misconceptions. Teachers address these through targeted teaching in the following autumn term, with spring retests used to evaluate the impact of this approach and check longer-term retention. Ongoing pupil voice, with targeted participation from SEND and disadvantaged pupils, provides further quality assurance of teaching, understanding and retention.
